INDUSTRY COLLABORATION

New pilot scheme to encourage collaboration with industry

The MRC and MRCT have committed a budget of £3m for 2006/07 to set up the Pilot Industry Collaboration Award Scheme to encourage collaborative research between MRC-funded researchers and industry.

The types of award available will be:

Supports academic/industry exchanges in either direction

Joint fellowship

Allows academic and industry partners to share a postdoctoral fellow working on a shared project, in academia, industry, or both

One salary plus recurrent costs

Research projects

To support pilot work for larger projects or networks, develop research in areas of joint interest or to help move work closer to application

One to three years

£60-500k including Full Economic Costs (FEC). These (but not the smaller awards) will be LINK awards, and the MRC will expect a contribution of 50 per cent or more from the industry partner)

For the pilot scheme, the competition will be open to members of academic research groups or industrial organisations who have attended the Showcase. For the Neurosciences and Mental Health Board (NMHB) Showcase, the deadline for applications is 3 April 2007 .

Applications will be assessed by a special panel drawn from the NMHB, the MRC College of Experts and representatives from industry. The panel will be chaired by Professor Chris Kennard (Chair of NMHB) and will make a final decision on the awards in June 2007.
