Medical devices and diagnostics

MRC Technology identifies, develops and commercialises medical devices and diagnostics created by academic researchers.

We have licensed device and software opportunities to companies around the world.

Our successes include:

Medical Devices
•  Optical Projection Tomography (OPT) is a technique for imaging biological specimens in 3D which operates under the brand ‘Bioptonics’. As well as selling OPT scanners we also provide an imaging service to researchers.  The technology is based on work by James Sharpe at the MRC’s Human Genetics Unit, further developed by MRCT staff in Edinburgh.
•  An MHRA approved device for the diagnosis of Barrett’s Oesophagus is currently undergoing a primary care study. The device has been developed and refined by Rebecca Fitzgerald at the MRC’s Cancer Cell Unit.

Software
•    Brain testing software from Adrian Owen at the MRC’s Cognition and Brain Sciences Unit was used by the BBC for their Brain Test Britain segment, part of the Bang Goes the Theory programme.
